THIS MONTH’S WINNER MIKE GREENE
Produce Merchandiser Lowes Foods
Myrtle Beach, SC
One of the slogans Carolinas-based Lowes Foods promotes is: “You Can’t Fake Local.”
Mike Greene has proudly delivered those ‘local’ products to his customers at the grocery chain for a dozen years by putting out pristine produce at Lowes.
Greene started his career on the grocery side at A&P in 1986 while attending college in South Carolina. He held many supermarket positions through the years — from dairy frozen lead to grocery manager to store manager — before beginning his career on “the fresh side.”
His role at Lowes has allowed him to not only work with some of the best produce the region has to offer but also some of the best people. He says, “The team I work with each day and the passion everyone has for the produce industry is very rewarding.”
That quest for quality, along with the tight-knit, family feel of its stores is some- thing he says Lowes Foods strives for. “We grow community every day; we invite our guests into the stores for a unique shopping experience,” says Greene. “In the produce department, we have Pick n Prep — an experience with a daily offering of the best fresh produce available. ... We also offer the Carolina Crate, where we support our local growers and allow the community to purchase a ‘share’ of product from nearby farmers.”
A reader of Produce Business magazine since 2007, Greene says articles “keep me up to date with what’s new in the industry and give me information about the farmers and companies that grow and supply the chains that sell to the communities.”
