There are so many stories in produce where the next generation of family members carry on the tradition of their ancestors and never leave the farm or wholesale market. And then there are stories like Bibi Mahieu’s, where a dream — in this case, taking the ultimate flier — ends up leading to a lifelong career in the industry.
A native of Belgium working in the airline industry, Mahieu jetted to visit a friend in Southern California in the early 80s. That friend had a connection — her father-in-law owned Areno Produce (which was later bought out by Fresh Point) in Santa Barbara — and Mahieu soon landed a job there. She also met her husband at Areno, saying, “Love blossomed in the lettuce cooler.”
Mahieu has spent the past 38 years culti- vating that second career in produce. Working her way up to merchandising and purchasing
manager, she has carved out a 19-year stint at Jordano’s, a 104-year-old company that is the second largest independent broadline foodservice distributor in California. She says her job is a “balancing act of managing the inventory, shelf life, quality, costs, service and managing the flow of product.”
It helps that she landed in, and works in, one of the most produce-rich areas of the United States.
“Our location is logistically blessed being in the midst of California growing areas [Oxnard and Santa Maria] and close to Salinas and the Los Angeles Terminal market,” she says. “I love buying a product that is healthy and nutritious, and I enjoy the fast pace and diversity. I cherish the many strong and friendly relationships I have with grower-shippers and other vendors. Every day is an adventure and full of challenges. It gets into your blood; you either love it or hate it, and I’m passionate.”
Mahieu has been a longtime reader of Produce Business, saying “It keeps me aware of current trends and new products. Some of the information I use in the weekly online newsletter for our customers.”
