Lori Hickey was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley but didn’t fall into the produce industry until the early 2000s, when she worked a ‘side gig’ with a friend as a booth helper at the PMA Foodservice Conference in Monterey, CA.
Prior to that, she spent years honing her skills as a performer for Good Company Players, a popular musical theater group in Fresno. It was there that she was cast into a production of Funny Girl and gained some of the skills for her next career — as a marketing professional.
“Performing has a way of making you work through your insecurities and lay it all out there,” Hickey says. “I can look back and see how my confidence has grown and how much easier it is to speak up when needed.”
After several years working for advertising and marketing firm Marketing Plus, she found her way to Fresno-based Baloian Farms, a
fourth-generation grower and seller of vege- tables for more than 100 years. Hickey, the company’s marketing director, says she “has the privilege of doing all things marketing, from package design and trade show manage- ment to social media, photography, recipe development and more. When a customer needs something extra to make the job easier, we do what we can to deliver the goods.”
It’s a job she immediately fell in love with. “We have a great group of people working tirelessly to put out the best possible product each and every day,” she says. “So many of our employees have been here many, many years. That to me says so much about the leadership at Baloian.”
She says she learns a lot from those veteran employees. “They offer such a wealth of knowledge and experience in this crazy game of produce. I hope when I grow up, I will know half of what they do.”
