He was what he meant to me personally, and to his industry, to his family highly respected by all the people who and to his friends, and to his colleagues, quickly I realized a few
Fred was my uncle and I had the honor of knowing him my whole life. He gave me the opportunity to join Hess Brothers nine years ago and since then I have had the privilege of sitting next to him every day. Hess Brothers Fruit Company was Fred’s life’s work. ThThe company was started by his father Arthur and his uncle Edward. Fred’s brother Jerry was also a partner in Hess Brothers and they ran the company for approximately 20 years after Ed retired. Fred’s sister Cathy also worked with her brothers for over 30 years as offiffice manager. Fred started pack- ing apples when he was a teenager and remained active in the business until the time of his death. I saw Fred a week before he passed at his house and we were discussing the upcoming season and some tweaks he thought we may need to make to our packing line. Fred had a real passion for the apple indus- try. He valued relationships above all else and considered our co-workers, growers and customers to be part of our family. He was always optimistic about the future of our industry and was always looking for new opportunities. He was a driving force

level of the apple industry, Fred became a close dear friend. My admiration and my respect for him only grew over the years.
In business Fred always brought a sense of calm and a quiet voice of reason to the ‘business table’. I am sure it was no different at home. He treated people with respect and courtesy. Honesty and integrity were not an option in Fred’s life, they were manda- tory. Fred followed the Golden Rule, even when others did not reciprocate.
His family was so dear to Fred, and the outpouring of love from his cherished flock was most evident at his service. From the youngest grandchild that participated to the tremendous service that was performed by Fred’s son Pastor Hunter Hess, the Hess family joined hands in prayer and song to celebrate Fred.
I will miss Fred, greatly. We traveled around the world together, we spent hours working on government export issues, we dealt with unfortunate problems with some disappointments, but also some successes, and some industry accomplishments that we were both proud of. His leadership was so appreciated and so valued.
All you had to do is see Fred’s smile and hear his laugh, and you knew that Fred loved and excelled in Life. God Bless Fred.
