THIS MONTH’S WINNER KENT SATHER
Director of Potato Programs North Dakota
State University Fargo, ND
Potatoes and potato seeds have been a staple of Kent Sather’s entire career. Now a director at the North Dakota State Seed Department, Sather has been a part of seed potato certi cation programs as an assistant manager or manager/director for 37 years.
His department is the North Dakota state agency responsible for seed certi cation — the beginning of the production line of potatoes for consumption — as well as regu- lation and testing of certi ed seed products, including eld crops and potatoes. Sather’s job is a big one, and it’s ever-expanding.
“Good potato growers have always been concerned about food quality and the health of their crop,” says Sather. “I am witness to that as I expand my training to be a Food Safety Auditor under the USDA-AMS auditing
branch. These types of food safety audits, in part, verify what growers have been doing all along: keeping their produce safe.”
Sather earned his degree in plant sciences from the University of Idaho, where he helped conduct potato disease research. The Madison, MN, native also boasts a degree in potato physiology from Colorado State University, and he spent 18 years at the school’s potato certi cation program. Prior to that, he was assistant manager of the Potato Certi cation Associ- ation of Nebraska.
This month’s issue of Produce Business contains features on two potato hotspots — the Red River Valley and the San Luis Valley, where Sather was located before he moved to Fargo and took on his latest role.
“Potatoes are my focus, so initially I look for PB articles relative to that crop,” says Sather. “Beyond that, the publication provides informative articles and ads about other food crops in the ag supply industry. It is always good to broaden one’s scope, and PB is a great resource.”
