THIS MONTH’S WINNER MARK ERICKSON
Senior VicePresident Blue Book Services
Carol Stream, IL
“Act with integrity.”
For Mark Erickson, those words are always front of mind, personally and professionally. At Blue Book, he has served many roles in his 29-year career, from ratings analyst to his current position overseeing IT, marketing and business development. His company has helped deliver sound business solutions for
the produce industry for 118 years.
“One reason why I joined Blue Book and have never left is that Blue Book’s core values so closely align with my personal values,” says Erickson. “I think one reason why Blue Book has been a thriving business since 1901 is we are committed to doing business fairly and withintegrity. Isawthatmodeledbycompany leaders when I rst joined Blue Book, and it’s something I try to model myself to my associ-
ates, customers and vendors.”
Erickson landed at Blue Book in 1990
after interviewing chief executive Jim Carr for
a college business ethics paper. After gradu- ating, he sent Carr a résumé and asked about openings. He was hired and has since risen to senior management level, with a focus on innovation and development.
He’s been busy, as Blue Book and the produce industry have evolved tremendously. “When I joined Blue Book in 1990, we had taken our rst step into the world of tech- nology — a fax machine about the size of my desk! As we all know, technology has changed
virtually everything in the past 25 years.” But one constant for Erickson, he says, has been savoring the consistent camaraderie
of those he deals with throughout produce. “One thing technology hasn’t changed in this industry is the personal relationships,” he says. “I remember attending my rst PMA Fresh Summit in 1996 and being amazed at how many people stopped by our booth to thank us for the work we do. ... I appreciate the many friendships that have developed from
doing business with the produce industry.” A regular reader of Produce Business since his early days at Blue Book, he says, “I respect that Produce Business tackles tough industry issues and is willing to challenge the status
quo to make our industry better.”
